Competition Overview
This WorldSkills UK competition showcases the values, behaviours and attitudes required to work in health and social care and what it means to provide quality care.
Competitors will be expected to exercise judgement and take appropriate action to support individuals to maintain their independence, dignity and control through a variety of practical exercises.
This competition is organised by ACTAN.
Who can enter?
All registrants must demonstrate strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience within a health and social care setting through the following skills and competencies:
In addition, all competitors must be confident in applying sector specific codes of practice and regulations. Registrants must be prepared to demonstrate their skills in a challenging competitive environment, which will reflect the diversity of the care sector.
Support a range of individuals according to their personal care/ support plans, including but not limited to:
- Person centred care
- Informed decision making in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005
- Activities of daily living
- Positive risk management
- Hygiene and infection control
- Nutrition, hydration and wellbeing
- Measuring vital signs manually
- Calculating BMI
- Moving and handling
- Administration of medication
- Monitoring physical and emotional changes
- Reflection, reporting and recording
- Understanding learning disability dimensions
- Understanding older persons care needs
- Knowledge of common medical conditions
- Treat people with respect and dignity and honour their human rights
- Communicate clearly and responsibly
- Support individuals to remain safe from harm
- Champion health and wellbeing for individuals being supported

General instructions
Each organisation may put forward a maximum of three competitors who must be entered in order of priority as determined by pre-heat selection (e.g. pre-heat competitions) and commitment to the full competition cycle.
Registrants will be required to submit a profile about their sector studies and experience. Places in the qualifying heats are limited and the organising partner ACTAN will undertake a fair selection process based on the information provided.
Successful registrants will be allocated to a qualifying heat, which may require a commitment to travel and (occasionally) over-night stay. If you are successful in securing a place in a qualifying heat you will be expected to attend and failure to do so will result in a £25 non-attendance fee.
